Leelanau Foods, Mawby Wines, and Larry Mawby Interview. Today we are tasting several Leelanau (Michigan) County foods. They include Peas & Peanuts, Carlson’s Fish Dip, Natural Northern Jalapeno Cherry Spread, and Cherry Republic Cherry Salsa. And we are pairing them with some sparkling wines from Mawby’s Sparkling Wines.

Our guest for “Cooking with Community Leaders – Leland, MI Edition” is Larry Mawby. Larry was the founder and owner of Mawby Wines until 2020 when he retired from full-time wine making. While retired, Larry tackled the Affordable Housing issue in Leelanau County and started the Community Land Trust Non-Profit Peninsula Housing. We discuss Mawby Wines, Peninsula Housing, and the Leelanau Conservancy with Larry. And we eat some classic Leelanau Foods with Mawby Wines. #leland #cookingshow

Carlson’s Fish Dip– Leelanau Foods

Fish Dip from Carlson’s is made of equal parts smoked fish and cream cheese and has some half-and-half added. Other ingredients include a little garlic powder and lemon juice. One of the best Leelanau Foods.

Community Land Trust – Peninsula Housing started in 2021

A Community Land Trust (CLT) is a non-profit organization designed to help communities acquire and manage land collectively. The idea is to stop private developers from acquiring land. They use it for purposes that don’t help the community. Instead, CLTs aim to ensure that land is used in ways that support affordable housing, community facilities, and local development.

Here’s how it works:

The CLT acquires land through purchase or donation. It retains ownership of the land, while individual or community members can lease or use the land for specific purposes. The CLT manages the land according to its mission, which often focuses on preserving affordability and ensuring community advantage.

One key feature of CLTs is to keep housing and sometimes commercial spaces affordable. They achieve this by separating land ownership from the ownership of buildings or other structures on the land. This way, the land itself isn’t a barrier to affordability.

CLTs are usually governed by a board. The board includes community members, residents, and other stakeholders. This ensures that decisions reflect the needs and values of the community.

CLTs can address issues like housing affordability, neighborhood stability, and local economic development. They focus on long-term community benefits instead of short-term profits.
